It was about 95 degrees on Saturday out in San Diego East County. I was stuck outside from 7 AM till 2 PM. When the heat got unbearable we started pouring ice cold water from the coolers on each other. It was so cold that it hurt at first but then it felt so good you were willing to pour more on yourself. I am pretty happy that I did have an extra shirt in my car, I was not thinking - white shirt + white bra + water = a show for your co-workers.....
The poor bike riders were so hot that they asked us to splash them with water as well. I do not know how they rode 72 miles in hot weather, plus a lot of it was up hill!

So yesterday was the Alpine Bike Challenge. It is a charity event where riders from all over can ride a 20, 30, 62, or 72 mile bike ride through San Diego East County. The money raised is split between Children's Hospital and the Alpine Scholorship fund. My company is the major sponser. I volunteer at one of the SAG stops every year. by the time the riders get to my stop they have cycled 32 miles. We provide water, sports drink. PB&J sandwiches, oranges, bananas, M&M's, first aid, shade and many other essintial items. It was a very successful event this year. Now I can relax until next year. It is very hot here this weekend. I will post some pictures of me and the other voluteers "cooling off" in my next blog. (note to self, do not wear a white T shirt and white bra and then ask a co-worker to pour a pticher of water over your head).
I need to go switch laundry and grab something to eat. I will post the "fun" pictures later!

1943 Guide to Hiring Women

The following is an excerpt from the July 1943 issue of Transportation Magazine. This was written for male supervisors of women in the work force during World War II.

"Eleven Tips on Getting More Efficiency Out of Women Employees: There's no longer any question whether transit companies should hire women for jobs formerly held by men. The draft and manpower shortage has settled that point. The important things now are to select the most efficient women available and how to use them to the best advantage.

Here are eleven helpful tips on the subject from Western Properties:
1. Pick young married women. They usually have more of a sense of responsibility than their unmarried sisters, they're less likely to be flirtatious, they need the work or they wouldn't be doing it, they still have the pep and interest to work hard and to deal with the public efficiently.

2. When you have to use older women, try to get ones who have worked outside the home at some time in their lives. Older women who have never contacted the public have a hard time adapting themselves and are inclined to be cantankerous and fussy. It's always well to impress upon older women the importance of friendliness and courtesy.

3. General experience indicates that "husky" girls - those who are just a little on the heavy side - are more even tempered and efficient than their underweight sisters.

4. Retain a physician to give each woman you hire a special physical examination - one covering female conditions. This step not only protects the property against the possibilities of lawsuit, but reveals whether the employee-to-be has any female weaknesses which would make her mentally or physically unfit for the job.

5. Stress at the outset the importance of time the fact that a minute or two lost here and there makes serious inroads on schedules. Until this point is gotten across, service is likely to be slowed up.

6. Give the female employee a definite day-long schedule of duties so that they'll keep busy without bothering the management for instructions every few minutes. Numerous properties say that women make excellent workers when they have their jobs cut out for them, but that they lack initiative in finding work themselves.

7. Whenever possible, let the inside employee change from one job to another at some time during the day. Women are inclined to be less nervous and happier with change.

8. Give every girl an adequate number of rest periods during the day. You have to make some allowances for feminine psychology. A girl has more confidence and is more efficient if she can keep her hair tidied, apply fresh lipstick and wash her hands several times a day.

9. Be tactful when issuing instructions or in making criticisms. Women are often sensitive; they can't shrug off harsh words the way men do. Never ridicule a woman - it breaks her spirit and cuts off her efficiency.

10. Be reasonably considerate about using strong language around women. Even though a girl's husband or father may swear vociferously, she'll grow to dislike a place of business where she hears too much of this.

11. Get enough size variety in operator's uniforms so that each girl can have a proper fit. This point can't be stressed too much in keeping women happy."

Last summer

So I could not think of what to blog about. I guess I can mention that I went to the movies on Friday to see Prom Night, and it was not scary like I thought it would be, it was actually stupid.

I decided to go through some pictures and I found this one from last summer. I took it with a disposable underwater camera. This is my friends daughter Isela who had just turned 2 when I took this picture. She is swimming underwater all on her own. I love this picture, it has even been my desktop wallpaper since last summer. I do not want to change it.

So I know I said I would get better at this but oh well, stuff happens.
I promise to try better. In my defense April is the worst month to have my job. I always say I am going to take the month off, but I am all talk. We sponser 2 charity events in April and we always do something big for employee appreciation week. This all takes place within a few days of each other plus you have to do all your regular work also. We have the MS walk @ legoland this Saturday AM, I am not going to it this year but I still have to help prepare for it this week. Then next Wednesday is our employee appreciation happy hour from 3-5 PM in our main parking lot. Since I work with Field Services/Facilities I get to start setting up for it at 6:30AM. It is going to be a Western theme and I have heard that Marketing is even bringing hay barrels, sounds like fun but it is just a lot of extra work for my department and as it is there are only 3 of us, one of which has only been here 4 months so he is still learning. Then the following Saturday is the Alpine Bike Challenge, which I enjoy working the day of, but do not enjoy all the prep work that takes place this week and next. So I will try to get better, I know I should be able to blog or post pictures this weekend because I have not made any plans.
I still say that Ricki wins for the crazist/busiest/longest blogs :)

The big 1-0!

Happy 10th Birthday to Austin Champion!

Open Arms

I am so excited, I heard on the radio earlier this week that Journey, Heart, and Cheap trick are coming to town this summer. I immediatly thought of my mom. She loves Journey and Heart, she always played them in the house when I was growing up, especially on house cleaning days. So I used the presale code this AM to try and get tickets. It appeared as if they had had only released the middle section for presale. I really wanted to be as close to the stage as I could. I figured I would have to wait till tomorrow and try to get them when they went on sale to the general public. After lunch I decided to try it one more time and Bamm, there were the perfect tickets, 5th row center. I little more expensive but I think that it will be worth it. Of course I could not keep my mouth shut, I was going to wait until at least Mother's Day to tell my mom that we were going but when I got such good seats I could not keep it to myself so I had to call her at work and tell her. Now we cannot wait until July 15th.....

I cannot wait to see everyone at Mandi's baby shower tomorrow!

War Heads

Ok, so last month at work we held a drive to collect items for Easter baskets. Then a few of us put together 80 Easter for the local YWCA. As we were making the baskets a co-worker Megan and I discovered that someone had donated the sour candy war heads. We decided to eat one and marketing took our picture. I just got the pics via email so I thought that I would share. They are horrible pictures but funny. And we did replace the candy that we ate :)

Go Wildcats!

It's me!

Ok, ok I seem to have been neglecting the blogger and the myspace lately. I really do not have a good excuse, it is due to being a little busy and a little lazy. I will try and set a goal to blog at least 3X's a week. We will see if I can keep it up. I fear that I have nothing to blog about. Christina and Mandi always have something interesting to blog about and really good pictures of the kids. Ricki even finds the time to blog with her hectic schedule, but lets see how she does when she is working 7 days a week, CRAZY :)
Lets see, it was a fairly laid back weekend. I went to the Color Me Mine Ceramic studio with my BFF Sarah and her 2 kidlets yesterday. I made an ice cream bowl but I cannot pick it up till next week. Then we went to her daughter, my goddaughter, Maddie's (Madelynn) T-ball game. She got her first hit off of the pitcher and it went flying to 2nd base. She also slid at home for the first time. She was so excited. I will try and post a few pics - so at least I have some pictures on my blog :) Then I came home and got cleaned up and went and saw Vantage Point. Umm it was an ok movie, interesting but they show the first 10 minutes or so again and again from about 4 different people's view.
Today I am not not doing to much, some laundry some cooking and now I am going to go next door and jump in thier hottub. My neighbors are just hanging out in their jacuzzi today, the crazy kids are even in the pool but that is just a little too cold for me. Ok, well hopefully I can keep up the blog this week!
